Summary

The novel follows Ofeyi, a disillusioned promotions man for the state-run Cocoa Corporation, who becomes the catalyst for a revolutionary movement. While visiting the communalist village of Aiyéró, he is inspired by their egalitarian lifestyle and decides to use the Corporation’s propaganda machine to spread Aiyéró’s ideals throughout the country. This subversion prompts a brutal retaliation from the “Cartel,” a corrupt ruling alliance of politicians, business tycoons, and the military. As the country descends into ethnic massacres and civil unrest the eponymous “Season of Anomy” Ofeyi’s lover, the “Cocoa Princess” Iriyise, is abducted by the Cartel’s agents. The narrative chronicles Ofeyi’s harrowing journey through the war-torn region of Cross-river to find her, culminating in a daring rescue from the high-security Temoko prison.

Plot

  • Introduction: Ofeyi visits the village of Aiyéró, a “quaint anomaly” that holds property in common. He is intrigued by their philosophy and is invited by the elders to become the next Custodian of the Grain.
  • Rising Action: Ofeyi subverts his corporate duties by writing satirical campaign songs and planting Aiyéró men in labor outposts like the Shage Dam to foster new communal entities. The Cartel senses his subversion and forces him onto a foreign study tour to neutralize him.
  • Climax: Upon his return, the Cartel initiates a “clean sweep” of Cross-river, targeting those influenced by Aiyéró’s “virus of thought”. During a performance in Cross-river, soldiers kidnap Iriyise, leaving Ofeyi to search for her amidst widespread slaughter.
  • Falling Action: Ofeyi and his companion Zaccheus traverse a landscape of horror, witnessing the massacre of church worshippers and escaping hunters in the bush. They reunite with “The Dentist,” an assassin who has organized a hidden camp for Aiyéró survivors and plans to eliminate the Cartel leaders.
  • Resolution: Guided by local allies, Ofeyi finds Iriyise in a deep coma within a hidden ward at Temoko prison. With the help of the Dentist and a reformed prison trusty named Suberu, they rescue her and join the Aiyéró survivors on a purification trek back to their homeland.

Setting

  • Aiyéró: A communalist utopia that prides itself on “balanced” living and the “umbilical cord” that keeps its youth returning to their roots.
  • Ilosa: The urban center of the “profit-hungry society,” housing the headquarters of the Cocoa Corporation.
  • Cross-river: A region marked by barren scrubland and ethnic tension, ruled by the tyrant Zaki Amuri.
  • Temoko: A prison in Kuntua that serves as a “world of its own,” containing wards for lepers and lunatics used to isolate and hide the Cartel’s victims.

Themes

  • Communalism vs. Capitalist Corruption: The contrast between Aiyéró’s shared wealth and the Cartel’s “mass operation” to drain the land’s resources for private gain.
  • The Ethics of Violence: A central debate between Ofeyi’s “seminal” approach of spreading ideas and The Dentist’s belief in “selective assassination” to “hit the snake on the head”.
  • Renewal and Germination: The metaphor of the “grain” and the “seed” represents the potential for a new generation to grow despite the decay of the current social order.
  • Ethnic Conflict and Mob Rule: The terrifying ease with which the Cartel manipulates “mindless mob viciousness” to exterminate those perceived as aliens.

Characters

Major Characters

  • Ofeyi: The protagonist, a “creative genius” and “Coordinator” for the Cocoa Corporation who becomes a revolutionary visionary.
  • Iriyise (Celestial/Firebrand): The “Cocoa Princess” who becomes the “Super-mistress of universal insurgence”; she is the “Chrysalis of the Cocoa Grain” who falls into a deep coma after her abduction.
  • The Dentist (Isola Demakin): A trained assassin from Aiyéró who believes that “the storm was sown by the Cartel” and must be met with “constructive economy” in killing.
  • Pa Ahime: The Chief Minister of Aiyéró and a “reed of life” who provides spiritual and practical guidance to Ofeyi.
  • Zaccheus: A loyal bandleader who witnesses Iriyise’s abduction and serves as Ofeyi’s companion through Cross-river.

Minor Characters

  • Zaki Amuri: The all-powerful tyrant of Cross-river who orders the “clean sweep” of aliens to maintain his land-grab.
  • Chief Batoki: A wily Cartel member whose domestic life is a scene of constant verbal and physical warfare with his wife and daughter.
  • Taiila: An Asian woman whose quest for “stillness” and a nun’s life acts as a peaceful foil to Ofeyi’s violent surroundings.
  • Suberu: A massive Temoko trusty who has served twenty years and eventually facilitates the escape of Ofeyi and Iriyise.
  • Semi-dozen (Nnodi): A mining engineer whose family is murdered by a mob, leading him to a suicidal act of retaliatory violence.
  • Aristo: A sleazy salesman and “ponce” who attempts to exploit Iriyise for his own advancement with the Cartel.

Literary Devices

  • Symbolism: The Cocoa Pod is used to symbolize the national cake being devoured by the elite, while the Grain represents the germination of a new social order.
  • Metaphor: The Dentist uses the “carious tooth” as a metaphor for corrupt individuals who must be extracted “before they infect the others”. The Corporation is called the “Headless Corpse” to denote its lack of moral direction.
  • Structure: The novel is organized by the lifecycle of a plant (Seminal, Buds, Tentacles, Harvest, Spores), mirroring the growth of revolutionary consciousness and the spread of corruption.
  • Allusion: Soyinka employs religious and historical allusions, such as comparing the sunset to the “Massacre of the Innocents” and the hideout of survivors to Massada.
  • Irony: The “Tabernacle of Hope” serves as a place of gruesome death, highlighting the loss of sanctity in a “Season of Anomy”.
